Fire door fire resistance test—Fire resistance limit testing with Guangdun Door Industry according to fire door standards
Published on November 3, 2024 | Reading Time: 3 Minutes
In the fire protection industry, Fire door fire resistance test is routine but vital to ensuring safety standards. Recently, Guangdun Doors, China’s leading manufacturer of wooden fire doors, conducted an extensive fire test to highlight the durability and effectiveness of its products. The test involved a solid wood door and a half-glazed wood door both burning in flames for more than 30 minutes to assess their performance in extreme conditions.
The purpose of Fire door fire resistance test.
The primary aim of this test was to evaluate how these wooden fire doors and their components withstand at least 30 minutes of direct fire exposure. Guangdun Door Industry collaborated with Asian Specialized Company, a procurement firm from Malaysia, to analyze how the installed locking mechanisms perform in such challenging scenarios and whether the fire resistance of the doors is impacted by these locking products.
Key Standards for Fire Door Components
According to Chinese standards, fire door components, including locks and hardware, must fulfill several critical requirements:
- Functionality in Emergencies: Fire doors must remain operational during emergencies.
- Fire Spread Prevention: The components should delay the spread of fire while in a closed position.
- Minimized Thermal Bridging: Ideally, the products should avoid or reduce thermal bridging effects.
Testing Setup for Wooden Fire Doors
The testing setup included the installation of a solid wood door and a half-glass wood door, framed in a traditional manner with drywall and potential wiring to create realistic conditions. The locking components tested included:
- Emergency exit locks
- Door openers
- Cover cable conversions
- Drop seals
These walls were then integrated into a large furnace, simulating the external wall in a fire scenario.
火灾测试期间的观察结果
Just two to three minutes into the test, noticeable changes appeared on the glass door. Observations through a small inspection panel revealed that the inner side of both doors was completely charred, although the solid wood door appeared to remain intact. After approximately 15 minutes, significant alterations occurred to the glass door, with only the gel layer between the glass panels preventing shattering.
After 30 minutes, the furnace temperature reached approximately 850 degrees Celsius. At this point, the half-glass wood door failed, while the solid wood door exhibited its first visible changes, particularly around the installed metal components. The test concluded around 37 minutes after flames penetrated the door frame and hinge side.
Results and Conclusions
Post-testing, the wall assembly was removed from the furnace, and the remnants of the doors were extinguished. All data and images captured during the test will be analyzed in the following days, contributing to further safety developments for doors and locks. Initial findings indicate that Guangdun’s wooden fire doors and lock products successfully passed the rigorous fire test.
